The Taliban Supreme Court has announced that 15 people were flogged in Kabul on charges of buying and selling narcotics in public.
The court said today (Sunday, April 5) in a statement that the individuals had been sentenced to between seven months and three years in prison, along with 10 to 30 lashes. It added that the flogging sentences were carried out yesterday.
The Taliban Supreme Court also reported yesterday that a woman was flogged in Kabul on charges of having an “illicit relationship.”
In recent months, corporal punishment of the accused by the Taliban has increased, with one or more individuals being flogged almost daily in public across different provinces.
International organizations and human rights advocates have described corporal punishment as a violation of human dignity and have repeatedly called on the Taliban to halt the practice.
