The release of Matiullah Wesa, an education activist, from Taliban prison has elicited positive reactions from the US special representatives for Afghanistan.
Rina Amiri, the US special representative for Women, Girls, and Human Rights in Afghanistan, wrote on the social network X on Thursday, October 27th that Matiullah Wesa should never have been arrested for advocating for the rights of Afghan girls’ education.
She expressed satisfaction with Wesa’s release after spending seven months in Taliban prison.
Amiri continues to demand the immediate release of all women’s rights activists and other human rights defenders who are in Taliban prisons.
Meanwhile, Thomas West, the US special representative for Afghanistan, also wrote on the social network X that he is pleased with the release of Matiullah Wesa and wants the release of all human rights defenders in Afghanistan from Taliban prisons.
Taliban intelligence arrested Matiullah Wesa, the head of the PenPath organisation and an activist in field of education, on the seventh day of the month of Hamal (Afghan calendar) after his trip to Europe and meeting with European officials.
It is said that currently Julia Parsi, Neda Parwani, Manizha Seddiqi, Rasoul Parsi, and some other activists are in Taliban custody, but this group has not confirmed or denied their detention until now.
