Richard Bennett: International Criminal Court gives victims of international crimes essential path for accountability, also in Afghanistan

January 11, 2025
Taliban bars UN rights envoy from visiting Afghanistan

UN Special Rapporteur Richard Bennett said that he supports UN Experts in call to US Senate to reject sanctions against International Criminal Courts.

“I support UN Special Experts in call to US Senate to reject sanctions against International Criminal Court (ICC). ICC gives victims of international crimes essential path for accountability, also in Afghanistan. Sanctions and threats against ICC and staff promote impunity in situations where justice is most needed”, he said.

UN experts urged the US Senate to oppose a bill seeking to impose sanctions and cut funding to the International Criminal Court (ICC), after the tribunal issued arrest warrants against Israeli leaders accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

The experts are dismayed by the passage of an Act in the US House of Representatives on Thursday (9 January), which sanctions the ICC following the court’s decision to issue warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli defence minister, Yoav Gallant.
