Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, has called for the accountability of perpetrators of war crimes in Afghanistan, in response to revelations regarding alleged war crimes committed by UK special forces.
Mr. Bennett stated today (Monday, 12th May), on his X (formerly Twitter) page, that the recent BBC Panorama report was “shocking” and emphasized the necessity of justice for victims and their families.
According to the BBC report, a number of UK special forces veterans have now broken years of silence, disclosing the killing of unarmed individuals and Afghan civilians in their sleep, as well as the shooting of detainees with their eyes bound by their comrades.
The report indicates that these revelations point to serious violations of human rights during British military operations, and the United Nations is calling for investigation and accountability in this regard.
Meanwhile, according to reports, during the approximately 20-year UK military presence in Afghanistan, at least 457 British soldiers were killed and thousands more were injured
