António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, says that safer water and
sanitation services play a vital role in supporting the rights and health of women and girls.
Today (Sunday, 22 March), on the occasion of World Water Day, Guterres called on
everyone to turn water into a force for gender equality so that its benefits reach every
community around the world.
This comes as millions of women and girls in Afghanistan do not have access to safe
water and their survival depends on unsafe water.
On the other hand, drought and limited access to drinking water in Afghanistan affect
women and children more.
