German media have reported that the country’s authorities deported two Afghan prisoners from the city of Hamburg to Kabul.
Deutsche Welle reported late last night (Tuesday, March 24) that the two men were transferred to Kabul on regular flights via Istanbul, Turkey.
They are said to be men aged 30 and 32, who were found guilty of crimes such as causing bodily harm, attacking law enforcement officers, and armed robbery.
The German government had previously also deported 20 Afghan citizens who were convicted of crimes to Kabul on a charter flight.
Deutsche Welle, quoting Germany’s Interior Ministry, wrote that this is the first direct deportation to Kabul without mediation by other countries.
This comes at a time when international organizations have raised concerns about the human rights situation in Afghanistan.
Earlier, Amnesty International had called for a halt to the deportation of Afghan citizens from all countries.
